LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – There are less than two weeks left until the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix returns for a second year. While we won't see the entire track being repaved like last year, major changes are still underway in preparation to host the world's fastest race cars, and significant traffic delays are expected.
Concrete barriers and overhead lighting have now been installed along the route for night races. A huge generator was also brought in to power the lights.
Tourists from all over the world pay top dollar to watch drivers reach speeds of 345 mph on the 6.8-mile Las Vegas Grand Prix course in and around the Strip. The Bellagio Fountain Club, built for this event, appears to be almost complete.
Last year, adhesive film was placed on the pedestrian bridge to block visibility, but people were able to remove it. This year is different. The appearance of the bridge will also change significantly.
The pedestrian bridge over Harmon south of Planet Hollywood currently has no glass coverings and offers great views all the way to the racetrack, but the nearby pedestrian bridge connecting the Cosmopolitan and Planet Hollywood already has A fence has been installed. There's no way to spot them. There is also a net installed overhead.
At last year's F1 safety briefing, Metro explained why it was necessary.
“We cannot allow people to stop the flow of pedestrian traffic and obstruct pedestrian traffic on the bridge during this event, and also for the safety of motorists. We cannot allow people to throw things on the tracks under the bridge.”
People who work on the Strip say they're already experiencing significant traffic congestion.
“It's very chaotic, especially around Bellagio and Caesars Palace… It's a dead end,” Abel Torres explained. Torres expects the situation to worsen as the race weekend approaches.
“We try to leave maybe a little over an hour early just to be safe. The traffic is very busy,” Torres said.
Ahead of this year's race, F1 has launched a website to help people avoid road closures during the race: F1 Information
Contains the latest information on construction impacting roads in the area around the Strip and Track.
