MARYLAND – A recent study suggests building two new span bridges to replace the aging structures that currently connect Maryland's east and west coasts, providing a long-awaited new Chesapeake Bay bridge. The bridge proposal could finally move forward. If approved, the new span would be built near the existing span and eventually demolished.
The Maryland State Transportation Authority (MDTA) has been studying the need for a new Bay Bridge since 2017, and the current study phase is expected to be completed by 2026. The project will then enter the design and construction stage, which could take several more years.
In response to increased traffic and the aging of current bridges, MDTA is hosting a series of public open houses in December to gather feedback from the community. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is a vital link for Delmarva residents and a vital route to and from the region, currently supporting an estimated 27 million vehicles annually. MDTA officials say it's time to address increased demand and wear and tear on the bridge, which stretches 7.3 miles from Anne Arundel County to Queen Anne's County.
A new bridge would likely involve first building a new eastbound span and then demolishing the existing eastbound structure. A similar process occurs for the westbound span. Although the number of lanes for the new bridge has not yet been determined, MDTA aims to improve traffic flow and ensure the long-term viability of the structure.
The importance of bridge safety was highlighted by the recent collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore. The state has set a goal to replace the Key Bridge by fall 2028, but MDTA has assured that this effort will not affect the schedule or funding for the new Bay Bridge.
Although cost estimates are not yet available, MDTA says building the new bridge will ultimately save on repairs and maintenance needed on Maryland's existing bridges, which are 72 years old and 51 years old, respectively. states.
MDTA will hold three town hall sessions in December for residents to learn more about the proposed Bay Bridge plan and share their thoughts.
