Ignace, MI – Motorists who use credit cards on the Mackinac Bridge will be subject to a new convenience fee.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority announced on Nov. 8 that it will collect a 2.3% fee on tolls paid by credit card to compensate for “increased credit and debit card transaction fees.”
MBA cited the rising cost of transaction fees from credit card companies, totaling more than $341,000 in 2024, as the reason.
“While this convenience fee does not cover all credit card processing costs, it does cover these costs so that most of the fee revenue can continue to go into the never-ending work of maintaining and operating the Mackinac Bridge. ,” said Authority Chairman Patrick “Shorty” Gleason.
The convenience fee adds approximately $0.09 to the regular $4 toll for passenger vehicles. The new rates will take effect from January 1st.
Customers who pay in toll lanes can avoid credit card fees by paying with cash.
MacPass holders can deposit with cash or electronic check to avoid fees. By December 1st at the latest, the minimum deposit amount for initial accounts will be reduced from $80 to $40, and the minimum amount for replenishment deposits will be reduced from $50 to $20.
Finally, MBA announced that American Express will no longer be accepted starting January 1st due to relatively high credit card processing fees.
