GAFFNEY — A well-known food and beverage company is expanding its operations in Cherokee County.
Nestlé USA announced on November 14 that it will invest $150 million in a production facility in Gaffney. The investment includes a new single-serve frozen food production line and enhancements to automation and digital technology. The announcement did not mention any new jobs.
Located at 2132 Old Georgia Highway, the location first opened in 1980 and has been a part of the community for more than 40 years.
Nicole Caldwell, Nestlé USA Gaffney Plant Manager, said this investment strengthens the company's dedication to the Gaffney community.
Caldwell said the investment “also reflects our continued commitment to strengthen our U.S. manufacturing footprint and internal capabilities. These enhancements will increase consumer demand for popular brands in our frozen foods portfolio.” We will be able to meet demand.”
Cherokee County, like neighboring Spartanburg County and much of the Upstate, has a lot of industrial investment. Construction began on the $415 million Cherokee Commerce Center 85 industrial park in late 2023.
This growth received mixed reactions from residents. However, several factories in the county have recently closed. Textile maker Carolina Cotton Works closed in July, and Timken's former plant is set to close at the end of 2023.
Cherokee County Council Chairman Tim Spencer said he is excited about the latest investment from Nestlé USA.
“This decision highlights our business-friendly environment and our talented workforce,” Spencer said. “Nestlé USA's continued investment is a testament to our strong communities and economic potential.”
Spartanburg County has experienced rapid growth over the years. The county is expected to see more than $1 billion in investment committed again in 2024. So far this year, the county has committed to $914 million in investment and 1,058 new jobs.
The company surpassed that milestone with $1.1 billion in capital investments committed in 2023, as well as the addition of 1,146 new jobs.
The county's northeast neighbor is enjoying the state's economic explosion. The Palmetto State is one of the few Sunbelt states experiencing accelerated growth. It grew by 1.7% in 2023, the highest growth rate in the country.
Gov. Henry McMaster said the state's strong economy and workforce make it an ideal place for companies like Nestlé USA to expand.
“We congratulate Nestlé USA on its $150 million investment in its Cherokee County facility, which not only reflects the company's confidence in South Carolina, but will also help strengthen our community,” said McMaster. said.
