Our land and lot guru, Vice President Dave Wilkinson, is celebrating 30 years with the company, and General Manager and CFO Shelley Mercer is in her 10th year with the company.
Having lived through the real estate industry's boom, bust and boom again, not to mention the pandemic, the staff at MacRo Commercial Real Estate continues to mature in their roles, not in terms of age, but in wisdom.
It was the summer of 1991, just nine months after the launch of the tiny startup MacRo, Ltd. Rocky McIntosh had just moved on from a large, family-run real estate company he'd started in downtown Frederick in 1980. With “no office” and one employee, he was setting up shop in his home and searching for a new home for his startup company. But he needed an assistant – someone to mentor him, someone to show him the ropes.
Dave Wilkinson came in for an interview, and it didn't take long for the match to be made. With a natural aptitude for the real estate industry, Dave had just finished several jobs as Marketing Director for a local office/warehouse project and as Community Manager for a local property management company. One thing he knew for sure was that he didn't want to be a Community Manager anymore. However, when it came to “DIRT” (Farms, Lands, and Subdivisions), he was a natural. It has been 30 years since Dave became an integral part of the MacRo team, and his value to our loyal clients and customers has only grown throughout that time. His dedication and integrity have earned him great respect from fellow land and commercial brokers, contractors, city and county officials, and especially those at the Frederick County Farmland Conservation Office, where he has helped many families turn their farms into lasting legacies. At the same time, he is clearly one of the most knowledgeable people in the county when it comes to creating rural estates. He is definitely the go-to guy in that field. As state and county zoning regulations get stricter every year, it is getting harder to find someone with that kind of expertise. As a former rugby player, he is someone his clients can count on to hit the ball on the field. Dave and his wife, Tammy, live in Frederick County and are raising their three wonderful children.
In the summer of 2011, many in the real estate industry around the world were just beginning to digest the fact that the bubble that had developed in the early 2000s had truly burst (some were reluctant to believe that the land and commercial real estate market would not recover anytime soon). The MacRo team was looking to reinvigorate their existing marketing projects as well as some new ones. What did they need? A competent and resourceful person to manage the accounting functions, a new website, marketing efforts, staffing, property management responsibilities, and someone to coordinate the company's listings, sales, and leasing arrangements. Simply put, MacRo needed a General Manager. And that's where Shelley (not to be confused with the 1966 Association hit “Along comes Mary”) came in. Shelley Mercer was a perfect fit for the team's culture and quickly took the reins. She came to the company with deep knowledge of the field, having served as VP of Operations for a privately held real estate acquisition, development, and homebuilding company for 10 years. She has had a steady role behind the scenes at MacRo for the past decade, and we hope she continues her great work for at least another decade. Shelley is a lifelong Maryland resident. She has made her home in Frederick County, where she raised her two children and now enjoys living with her seven grandchildren.
