Amy Mourd, principal at Mourd Evans Lawyers, will be speaking on “Commercial Real Estate Transactions Involving Different Types of Entities” on the second day of the Specialist Accreditation Conference 2024.
This session will explore key rights involved in commercial real estate transactions and issues affecting different types of entities, including Foreign Investment Review Board considerations, GST, exemptions and tax benefits for certain trusts and companies.
The session will also discuss self-managed super funds, exceptions to typical vendor warranties under the Transfer of Real Property Act, and recent case law.
Ms. Mood is a Certified Real Estate Law Specialist, specialising in real estate law. She has worked in this field for over 20 years and has experience in a range of matters involving the acquisition, disposal, leasing and development of real estate, real estate transactions and real estate related disputes, as well as commercial transactions involving the buying and selling of businesses. Ms. Mood is regularly involved in commercial transactions relating to the child care industry, in particular the buying, selling and leasing of child care centres.
Early career
Ms Mood took a non-traditional approach to law, taking a gap year after graduating from high school and returning home to find she had an interest in law. She took up employment in a boutique law firm in North Parramatta with a focus on real estate. In the role of paralegal/secretary she subsequently became a licensed conveyancer and completed her law degree with the Attorneys Admissions Board in 2006.
“[I]”In some ways I feel like I'm dipping my toe into the law a little bit, but once I got in I really enjoyed it and got immersed in the world of real estate transactions,” she says.
A passion for real estate law
“Real estate was interesting to me in the sense that I get to help people achieve something, like buying their first home. [or] We help businesses grow in the real estate industry.
“That's what I'm interested in…helping people…I enjoy helping them grow their businesses and expand their real estate portfolios,” she says.
Mould went on to become a lawyer and qualified as a specialist in real estate law in 2021. “I always thought of qualification as almost like a gold badge,” he says. Obtaining qualification can be a long and arduous process. Mould was surprised by the amount of investment required, but is grateful for the journey. “I learned a lot. It was fun,” he says.
Her advice to anyone considering this procedure is to “give yourself plenty of time.”
What to expect from the meeting
Mr. Mood will speak about commercial real estate transactions involving different types of entities. He will discuss what practitioners need to know about real estate transactions, an overview of the main entities involved in these types of transactions, tips and pitfalls in using specific entities, and various issues associated with these types of entities.
The Specialist Accreditation Conference will take place on 15-16 August 2024.
